    There are 2 generally accepted theories concerning hair growth. The first is heredity determines the degree of hairloss experienced in a lifetime. The second is there's a biological clock ticking away in the hair follicles on the top of the head that at some point in time goes off and sets in motion the beginning of the hairloss process.

    I will address the Biological Clock Theory first. The biological clock theory just doesn't make sense. I have seen various stages of hairloss on men since the early 1950s.     The Hairgrowth Cycle begins with the hair follicles dropping their hair at the end of the growth cycle which occurs at random. Each hair grows for 3-5 years. It then withers and falls out over a period of 1 month. The hair follicle then goes dormant for a period of 3 months. A new hair then begins to grow and the cycle repeats itself over and over again. When the hair follicle does not receive adequate nutrients, the hairgrowth cycle is shortened and the hair shaft gets thinner with every full cycle. The variables that determine how successfully one grows hair are the nutrients available at the time the hair is about to begin its growth cycle and the circulation and metabolism needed to effectively deliver the nutrients to the hair follicles.
